my cord for the controller broke do i have to get a new one or can i use a diffrent cord

You can simply use any good quality charge & sync micro USB cable. You need to make sure it is a charge AND SYNC cable though, because some cheap cables only charge devices and don't have the extra wire inside to transmit data.
